SUMMARY:September Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:IDEA Part 2: Navigating Legacies of 1898: Bloody Funding & Systemic Racism in the Cape Fear and Beyond \nMost\, if not all\, people living in the Cape Fear area know about and condemn the atrocities that took place in 1898. But what about the years that followed? What about now? Historian and Racial Justice Educator\, Lettie Gore\, will join us to discuss the history of the racial landscape where we live and work. Where do we\, and the important missions we serve in the community\, fit amidst what has often been a turbulent historical landscape? \nCoffee & Breakfast bites will be provided by members of the Board and Programs committee–thanks guys! \n**If you are fully vaccinated\, masks are optional** \n8:00 am – Networking with Coffee and Breakfast Bites \n8:30 – 9:30 am – Program \n9:30 – 10 am – Q&A – Please email questions for our presenter Lettie Gore to Lauren Daley at execdir@domesticviolence-wilm.org. Ms. Gore will not use any identifying names or details when addressing questions. \nLettie Gore is a Black woman\, historian\, and racial justice educator living in Wilmington\, NC. She is also the host and owner of her podcast History Shows Us. Lettie’s passion for telling history’s truths and connecting the past to today’s racial and social justice issues is evident in the work she does. \nLettie received her Masters in History in 2015 from UNCW\, focusing primarily on American history and specializing in African-American and race studies\, contributing enormously to her work as a historian today. She received her Masters in Conflict Management & Resolution in May 2020\, also from UNCW. This MA equipped Lettie with knowledge and skills to assess\, respond to\, and manage a broad spectrum of conflicts in different settings\, and effectively mediate\, facilitate\, and communicate. \nThrough her business Lettie’s History Education and Consulting Services\, Inc.\, Lettie provides various learning opportunities. These include combining her extensive history and antiracism knowledge with her conflict resolution skills to have necessary racial justice conversations with truth and compassion to help people find tangible tools to create personal and collective transformation. She helps aspiring and active change makers take aligned and sustained action for racial justice\, diversity\, equity\, and inclusion so Black people and those in other marginalized communities can experience true justice. \nLettie has been the guest on numerous podcasts\, is involved in the local Wilmington community\, and has participated on many panel discussions about history and racial justice. Her Patreon community online enjoys tons of history\, antiracism\, and conflict resolution content from her throughout the month\, including a book club! \nOne of Lettie’s favorite James Baldwin quotes is\, “I am what time\, circumstance\, history have made of me\, certainly\, but I am\, also\, much more than that. So are we all.” These words continue to be a reminder and a guide for her as she lives out what she knows is her passion and part of her purpose.
