Job Title: Development & Outreach Director 

Reports to: Executive Director 

FLSA Status: Full time, Exempt

Schedule: M-F, 9 AM to 5 PM, with some evenings and weekends

Salary range: $43,000 plus, depending upon experience

The Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF) Development & Outreach Director manages and directs HWF’s development, marketing, communications, and member support functions, and has responsibility for recruiting sponsors, donors and members, writing grants, and designing and coordinating signature fundraising events. The position utilizes communications skills, including copywriting and graphic design. HWF’s Development & Outreach Director communicates the organization’s mission, initiatives, events and progress to members and the broader public through newsletters, fundraising appeals, website updates/maintenance, and social media. Through collaboration and communication, the HWF Development & Outreach Director helps create, grow, and celebrate connections that allow HWF to perfume its mission and strengthen its impact on the people and places HWF serves.  

Job Duties: 

  • Identify, research, and write grants to support HWF’s programs and projects. 
  • Develop relationships with potential new donors and sponsors, and maintain relationships with existing donors and sponsors, by identifying and communicating shared goals, highlighting mutual benefits, and building personal connections through regular engagement and expressions of gratitude. 
  • Utilize creative writing, copy editing, and graphic design skills to produce social media posts, newsletters, press releases, website pages, event programs and signage, mid-year and end of year appeals, and annual reports. 
  • Manage HWF’s social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms. 
  • Organize HWF’s hallmark events, including the Azalea Festival Home Tour, the Annual Fall Fundraiser, Preservation Month events, and other smaller events throughout the year. 
  • Support HWF’s mission by working with the Executive Director to identify opportunities to partner with, support, and educate community stakeholders, including HWF members, community nonprofits, schools and neighborhood and civic organizations. 
  • Utilize NEON, or other customer relationship management platform, to record interactions with and contributions by sponsors, donors, members and volunteers and use this data to identify successful campaigns and regularly follow up with valued supporters to sustain engagement. 
  • Update the website regularly, including general maintenance as well as the addition of webpages for new events, initiatives, etc.  
  • Coordinate volunteers, enacting simple outreach strategies to organize and maintain ongoing volunteer relationships. 
  • Ensure that all public presentations and marketing reflect and support HWF’s mission, content strategy, and organizational branding. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • A degree in nonprofit management, business, communications, marketing, public history or a related field. 
  • Experience working with a similar historic preservation organization or with a non-profit or other organization in a related field. 
  • 1-3 years of development/fundraising experience and event planning. 
  • Interest in historic preservation and history. 
  • Ability to work in a small team environment. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Sitting for extended periods of time 
  • Use of computer for extended periods of time
